Kristian Berg was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and grew up on Minnesotas Iron Range. His first professional experience was on the docudrama Foreclosure (1982), a short film made in partnership with a small farm community in west-central Minnesota as a political statement about the farm crisis. In 1989, he joined the Emmy-winning PBS science series Newtons Apple (1983) as a staff producer.
