He photographed such films as Kipps (1941), Szary lord (1943) and Waterloo Road (1945). His ambition, however, was to become a director, and he got his chance with Madonna of the Seven Moons (1945). His career started to fade in the 1950s and he turned to directing in television, with the occasional foray back into films, mainly in somewhat lower-grade B horror pictures. His most notable among them were probably the cult classic sci-fi thriller Fiend Without a Face (1958) and Horrors of the Black Museum (1959), his final film..
